I'm sure everyone highly anticipating what our shift to digital learning will look like. While our 9th Lit team is still working out some of the particulars, the most important information is listed below. If students experience technical difficulties while completing assignments remotely, they will not be penalized. Please just reach out via email or Remind (Remind code for this class is @curran9th). The blog will be updated everyday and students will receive a daily remind message. 1) We finished our Bronx Masquerade Unit on Friday. Any students who were absent can absolutely make up all missed assignments, however we are still working out how that will happen. I will send out more information about the Bronx Masquerade Graphic Essay, Choral Reading and Exam tomorrow. 2) We are now starting our Dramatic Literature Unit with a study of Romeo and Juliet. I am truly devastated that this will happen remotely as it is my FAVORITE unit all semester. However, I am accepting the challenge of making Shakespeare accessible while not in person! 3) We will be using the No Fear Shakespeare version of Romeo and Juliet. Students may purchase this text if they prefer a hard copy but the entire text is available online for free at this link: https://www.sparknotes.com/nofear/shakespeare/romeojuliet/page_2/ 4) We will still use the same digital learning platforms we have been using (Remind, Blog, Google Drive, USA Test Prep) but we may add platforms if we feel they will be beneficial to student learning. We are still exploring possibilities but will keep you posted with information through Remind & email. The following assignments are just to get us started this week. I will send out a plan for the rest of the week tomorrow. Each week, the goal will be to have all assignments completed by Friday. Online learning is flexible so I will provide a daily plan, but students may ultimately accomplish each task at their own pace each week. Monday assignment: Before we begin Romeo and Juliet, we need to finish our Bronx Masquerade CEIEI paragraph. Students have a yellow rough draft sheet. It is suggested but not required to fill out the rough draft. Final drafts should be typed in our class Google folder. Students enter the class folder, enter the Bronx Masquerade CEIEI folder, and type in the document with their name on it. If you have trouble accessing, just contact me. Complete the Anticipation Guide (first page of the pink packet received on Friday). The anticipation guide is just your opinion! Choose a number and write a 1-2 sentence response for each item. Tuesday assignment: Complete the Ted Talk worksheet (page 2 of pink packet). The Ted Talk is called Hip Hop and Shakespeare by Akala and is accessible here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSbtkLA3GrY. Additionally, it may help students understand our reading to view the play in its entirety. Typically we do film comparisons throughout the unit as we read but that will prove difficult as all versions are not available. I did find one complete version available on YouTube. Students are encouraged to view the film before reading! www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBDcDr4XWpY&t=2108s Again, these assignments are just to get us started. We will begin actual reading of the play on Wednesday! ** I will have "office hours" from 10:30-12 M-F. This means I will be plugged into my computer answering all communications as quick as I can! Ideally, I would like to set up a video platform that y'all can log into during that time so we can video chat. I am looking into a few options and well send out info ASAP once I decide which platform will work best. ** Apart from "office hours", I am available pretty much 24/7 via Remind and most of the day via email. Let me know if you have any concerns or issues with your projects. I know this shift may cause some uncertainty at first but rest assured that we will support all students with the same level of attention that we would in the regular classroom. Thank you for your patience and understanding! Katie Curran Today we:
